The signs of Autumn

Autumn is a sad season. The nights are longer, the days are shorter, the cold is setting in, the leaves are in the dying process. The heat has to be fired up and the windows closed. Having to rake the leaves, prune the perennials and watch them shrivel on the stems. The brightly colored finches and other birds leave town. Many salmon go up the rivers and streams to die. Winter will be arriving on our doorsteps before we know it.

Autumn is a wonderful season. It is wonderful to see the glorious shades of orange, red, yellow and green in the leaves. The beautiful Harvest and Hunter's moon, the cozy feeling of pulling the shades, sparking the fire and curling up to read a book or watch a bit of TV and eat popcorn. The winter birds are arriving and filling their bellies with the leftover seeds (and those we put out for them). The voices of the children as they play football in the street, zoom by on their skateboards, bikes or scooters. Watching the children pile the leaves and jump in only to pile them for another jump. (I'm so blessed to live in a small mountain town where these things still take place.) The markets are heaving with pumpkins, squash and Autumn colored floral arrangements. Even though I don't like juices made of apples, I love the smells of mulled/spiced ciders. I love seeing the pumpkin fields and the corn mazes. The Bald Eagles return en mass, to perch on the tops of dead trees, and feed on the dying salmon. The bears feed constantly to fuel themselves for the long winter sleep, safely away from humankind.

All in all, it's another season, another segment of time given to us by our Most Holy God. Who can argue with that?
